Robert Nagamine has provided voters with clear stances on key issues by responding to the 2020 Political Courage Test.
Pro-life | Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Pro-life, with only a few exceptions worth considering: (1) danger to mother's life, (2) pregnancy due to rape and (3) incest. We need to find ways to protect every new baby and give that baby a chance to live, if possible. Our Declaration of Independence that made our nation the greatest nation ever emphasizes "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". Let's tread very carefully when thinking about limiting life. We should find ways to preserve it. |
No | In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
No | Do you support expanding federal funding to support entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare?
No. However, Social Security and Medicare needs to be supported! Right now, we can't afford to increase these programs. |
Yes | Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yes, Unions have too much money influence on elections. |
Yes | Do you support increasing defense spending?
Yes, but only if needed. Hawaii is in a militarily strategic area and could also be strategic to our economic growth. |
Yes | Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
No | Do you support lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes | Do you support providing financial relief to businesses AND/OR corporations negatively impacted by the state of national emergency for COVID-19?
Yes, because we need this to survive this crisis. Federally, we could possibly fund low interest loans to small businesses and corporations. Legislation must be crafted to prevent misuse of funds. Federal money must not be taken advantage of when not really needed. |
No | Do you support requiring states to adopt federal education standards?
Definitely not. One size fits all is not always a good thing. Also, curriculum shouldn't be changed too often. Don't fix what is not broken. |
Yes | Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?
No | Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
No. States can regulate themselves. Individual states can be very different when faced with their own gas emissions. For example, California can be totally different from another state with a lower population base. |
No | Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
Basically No, but Yes if it is common sense legislation to prevent individuals with mental health issues who are a danger to themselves and others. |
Yes | Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
No | Do you support requiring businesses to provide paid medical leave during public health crises, such as COVID-19?
Good idea, but for small businesses this could be difficult to fund and implement. Any compromises need to be looked at but for small businesses this could be too much to handle. |
Yes | Do you support the construction of a wall along the Mexican border?
Yes | Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
The Supreme Court made a decision in June of this year in favor of Dreamers. All others, especially criminals, should be deported. This should be handled carefully and with a case by case decision. Our nation should process new citizens who desire to be contributing and good citizens. |
Yes | Should the United States use military force to prevent governments hostile to the U.S. from possessing a weapon of mass destruction (for example: nuclear, biological, chemical)?
Yes | Do you support reducing military intervention in Middle East conflicts?
We really need to work with our allies and help them to take more ownership of problems in the Middle East. |
Yes | Do you generally support removing barriers to international trade (for example: tariffs, quotas, etc.)?
Yes, but only if countries we trade with have fair market practices and do not take advantage of us, resulting in our own disadvantage for the present and future. |
Since Hawaii and our nation are in a (1) health crisis due to the CORONA Virus Pandemic and (2) resulting economic crisis, I need to sponsor or co-sponsor any legislation that would help Hawaii and our nation get out of both these crises. There are other potential areas, but the 2 above standout and require lots of attention. As far as funding goes, we should explore areas in our national budget that could be temporarily cut or downsized, eliminating areas where both parties could agree on cutting. One area could be Planned Parenthood funding, since this funding is very controversial. |
